DIY Melted Ice Cream Cone Donuts

With these little baby cones lying around the studio after our mini party shoot… I’ve been schemin’ and dreamin’ ideas for them! And somehow melted ice cream cone DONUTS was the first thing that came to mind! Nope, that’s not real ice cream. It’s donut frosting with a little donut hole “scoop” underneath! Clever, huh? The perfect summer party treat!

DIY Melted Ice Cream Cone Donuts

ingredients

5 to 7 plain donuts (glazed works too!)
5 to 7 mini ice cream cones
5 to 7 plain or glazed donut holes
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon warm milk
Sprinkles
Piping Bag
Toothpicks (Optional)
Cherries and/or Fondant (To make mini cherries!)

1. Whisk together powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, and milk until smooth in a shallow bowl.
2. Place 1/4 of the icing into a piping bag fitted with a small circle tip. Dip the top of each donut into the icing. Using the piping bag, pipe around the edge of the frosting to make it look the icing is melting and dripping (like ice cream would).
3. Frost the donut holes and immediately place one on each donut, slightly off to the side. Add a bit of extra frosting to smooth out the “seam” if necessary. Top each donut hole with the mini ice cream cones.
4. Place the sprinkles around the cone and onto about half of the donut. You’ll likely need to help the cone stay upright until the frosting sets. We recommend propping it up against something, like a glass or cereal box.
5. For the fondant cherry, shape red fondant into small balls. Place 1/2 of a real cherry stem into each one. Paint a thin coat of red food coloring mixed with almond extract to give it a deep cherry color. Let sit for about an hour to dry.
