One of our most popular costumes was the cereal bowl, which I think is because everyone has such a deep, nostalgic love for the stuff!? And you know I’m all about breakfast for dessert and dessert for breakfast so we had to do a DIY for a cereal bowl CAKE! Yep, that’s a cake. And no special equipment required… just any oven-safe bowl!!!
Did I mention the cake also tastes like cereal? Mmmmm!!
For the cake:
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
3 eggs, room temperature
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vinegar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup crushed Froot Loops
For the frosting:
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
3 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon milk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
1. Butter and flour a small oven-safe bowl. Our bowl was about the size of a real cereal bowl!
2. Cream together the butter, shortening, and sugar till smooth. Add in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each.
3. Whisk together the flour and baking powder. In another bowl, combine milk, vinegar and vanilla.
4. Add in the flour mixture and the milk mixture to the butter mixture and mix till combined. Scrape sides of bowl and whisk again. Fold in the crushed Froot Loops.
5. Fill the prepared oven-safe bowl 3/4 of the way full with the batter. Bake in pre-heated oven for 30 to 50 minutes (depending on size of bowl), until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool for 15 minutes. Remove from bowl and let cool, flat side down.
6. Once cool, turn over. Using a small sharp knife, starting 1/4 of an inch in from the edge, cut a 1/2 in deep circle out of the top of the “bowl” to create a well for the Froot Loops to sit. If you find the cake is too crumbly to cut easily, pop it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes to firm it up first! Then continue cutting.
7. For the frosting, cream together the shortening and butter till smooth. Gradually add in the powdered sugar and mix till combined. Add in vanilla and milk. Combine.
8. Frost the bowl cake, smoothing out the sides with a small offset spatula. Fill the well with Froot Loops. Finish off with a spoon!

Of course, you could fill it with any cereal of your choice (like Lucky Charms for St. Patrick’s Day!!)!! But for us, the obvious choice was Froot Loops!!!! What’s your fave cereal?

Well DAMN this is just friggin great. Let’s see…I’m thinking Cap’nCrunch with the little berries (they still make that?) or COOKIE CRISP which I’m almost positive they don’t make anymore. The USDA ruins everything.
Stupid food pyramid.
Kelly says
Believe it or not, they DO still make cookie crisp!!!!!! Also, my fave cereal of all time was Cap’n Crunch Oops All Berries!

I AM CRAVING FROOT LOOPS SO BADLY NOW!! It was my dream cereal as a child. As soon as I went to university and lived on my own in my dorm room, I would have it for dinner. SO BAD FOR ME but so good. Love this crazy cake, Kelly! XO

I love this idea! I was also thinking it could be cool to use cereal milk for the milk in the cake–maybe it would add a bit of extra cereal flavor?

Hi Kiana! You should be able to substitute butter for the shortening. Here’s some info on that! Hope that helps!
