Blue and Terracotta Bathroom Renovation

Holy moly, folks! We are in the final stretch of major renovations!! Our guest bathroom, which I’m calling the kids bathroom (because kids rooms are just MORE FUN!), is the final major renovation in the main part of our home. After two years of nearly constant renovations, I am beyond excited to type that sentence.

And it’s coming along SO FAST! So I wanted to bring you guys up to date with a few posts about the design plan, layout updates and progress! Since it’s a lot of info, I’ll break it into a few and start today with my design inspo and color palette! I’ve done a LOT of pink in this house (but you guys know that!) so I wanted to do something totally different and it’s turning out SO fun!! Keep reading for more!

The Color Palette

I keep private Pinterest boards for each room in our house, and pin random things that I want to remember for each room. When I started on this room design, I noticed that I had a lot of blues pinned, which is pretty unusual for me, especially for a bathroom where it can swing traditional really fast. BUT I wanted a challenge so I started gathering some inspiration for unique color palettes including blue and eventually landed on blue and terracotta!! I love that the terracotta and orange tones warm up the bold blue.

Floor to Ceiling Tile!

I found this amazing blue tile color from Fireclay Tile, who you may remember we worked with on our master closet (our very first renovation!!). Their tile is all handmade and cut to order right here in California! The color is called “Azul” and it’s STUNNING. I envisioned this bathroom being kind of like a shiny jewel box so we decided to go floor to ceiling tile on three of the four walls, plus the floors!!! Here’s a peek at the layouts/patterns I chose:

I went with the 2×8 size. The walls are all going to be vertical and the floors have a vertical border, like the above, that make it look like the tile carries down from the walls… plus a herringbone pattern in the center!! Here’s a peek at the tile going in!

I picked a terracotta grout to tie in some of the warmer accessories I chose!

Adding More Natural Light

This bathroom only has that one tiny window you see up there, so after seeing what a crazy difference the Velux sun tunnels* made in our master bathroom, we were pumped to work with them again to add a few to this space! Similar to the other bathroom, we didn’t have a ton of room to work with so the sun tunnels are great because they are mirrored on the inside so they pull in a TON of light even though they don’t take up much room on your ceiling! We added two in this space and it’s made a huge difference. I’ll share some peeks over on stories soon!

Bold + Colorful Wallpaper for Kids Rooms

Putting the “Kids” in Kids’ Bathroom

While I wanted this kids’ bathroom to be versatile since it’s the bathroom our guests will use too, I also wanted to play “kids” aspect too! I was inspired by a “lion” (it’s really a panther) vase that Arlo picked out at Target and decided to add a bit of an animal theme to the room just for fun!

And then I stumbled on this tiger wallpaper and it just really sealed the deal. We’re only doing it on one wall, and you can only see the wall if you’re in the bathroom, so it’s a fun little secret element of pattern!

Also, Arlo is CONVINCED that a dolphin is going to be in his new bathtub thanks to that scene in Mary Poppins Returns. I think I’m gonna buy him an inflatable one and surprise him. 😉

Bathroom Fixtures + Furniture

I’m going to do a follow up post next week to talk all about the new layout of the bathroom and where we’re putting everything, how we saved some money and how we’re adding a bathtub (my DREAM bathtub), etc. But I’m excited to be working with Build.com on all the major fixtures for the space!! We’re using champagne bronze Delta faucets which we’ve used throughout our house and Signature Hardware tub and vanity, among a few other pieces, all from Build! They have a really wide selection of items all in one place, and I love that the carry unique pieces too… like the navy vanity I chose!! You can see some of the items below but I’ll talk more about them next week!

Oh! And I’m also still on the hunt for a rattan shelving unit to replace some of the storage we lost in the reno!

Adding Some Length to This Shower Curtain?

I bought this shower curtain and really love it but since our ceilings in this room are pretty high, it’s not long enough. I was thinking about adding some sort of really wide macrame trim to the bottom, what do you think!?

OK one final peek! Couldn’t resist!! Stay tuned next week for the layout plan and let me know if you have any questions you want me to answer in that one!!

Oh Kelly, you knocked this color palette out of the park. It’s so darn cute. Sophisticated but so playful. & the elements you are bringing in, to balance it all are amazing. Can not wait to see it all come to life.
