Every year, we make Christmas ornaments with popsicle sticks and it is one of our family’s favorite traditions. Each year grandparents get a handmade ornament gift featuring our son to commemorate him growing up so fast! This year, we made popsicle stick storefront ornaments!
What I love about this storefront ornament idea is that kids can choose a “store” that represents what they love! Perhaps they’re a bookworm and want to make a bookshop, or an ice cream shop for the sweet tooth, a toy shop, a sports store. The options are endless!
Our son just so happens to love Christmas so he went with a classic Christmas shop. The dream shop, if you ask me! Here’s how to make these sweet and easy ornaments to gift this year with just popsicle sticks, paint and a favorite picture. Everyone who receives one will absolutely love it!
Supplies Needed
Here’s what you’ll need to make each ornament:
- 7 popsicle sticks per ornament
- 7 jumbo popsicle stick per ornament
- 1 wood bead per ornament (for the door handle)
- Hot glue gun (This is for adult use only!)
- Paint in desired color(s)
- Paintbrushes
- Sharpie or white brush pen (Depending on what color you choose for the sign!)
- Photo (You can use a wallet size or cut down a 4×6, which is what I did. I recommend using a photo printed on photo paper or a laminated photo so it lasts!)
- Felt (optional, to finish off the back of the ornament)
- Twine or ribbon for hanging
- Decorations (if desired): Mini wreaths, Santa hats, Christmas Lights, Mini Candy Canes
- Scissors
Popsicle Stick Ornament Storefront Step-by-Step Tutorial
Follow these steps to make these sweet Christmas ornaments with popsicle sticks:
- Hot glue six popsicles sticks to one jumbo popsicle stick, five on one side and one on the other.
- Glue a regular popsicle stick across the top of the six popsicle sticks as well to secure.
- Cut a jumbo popsicle stick to be the length of the opening left (as shown above) and glue it above the other jumbo popsicle stick.
- Paint! This is where the kids get involved! Paint your storefront your desired color(s). The three popsicle sticks in the center of the five you glued together will act as the “door” so paint those a different color than the rest of the ornament. Paint one additional jumbo popsicle stick a color of your choosing. (This will later become the sign for your storefront)
- Additionally, you’ll paint the jumbo popsicle sticks that will become the awning. Paint 2 jumbo popsicle sticks one color, and 2 another contrasting color.
- Once dry, cut each painted jumbo popsicle stick in half. You can now adjust the size of each piece to your choosing depending on how big you want the awning to be. I made mine about 2″ long.
- Hot glue the awning pieces to the popsicle stick across the top of your storefront.
- Write (or have your child write) the name of the storefront on the extra jumbo popsicle stick you made. Trim off the rounded edges. Note: If you use a white pen like we did, it goes on clear but turns white once dry!
- Hot glue the sign overtop the awning.
- Hot glue your photo to the back of the ornament in the opening you created in.
- Decorate! Add a bead for the door handle, a wreath to the door, Christmas lights to the sign, a candy cane or santa hat to the child(ren) in the photo.
- Cut a 5″ piece of twine or ribbon and tie a knot to make it a loop. Hot glue the knot to the back of your ornament for hanging.
- If desired, cut a rectangle of felt to cover up the back of your ornament and finish it off. Hot glue it on.
How To Gift Popsicle Stick Ornaments
Be sure to write the year, age, and the name(s) of the children, on the back of the ornament for memory keeping purposes!
Choose an ornament for each family member you want to gift one too. We like to pick the color we think each person would like best!
Wrap the ornament or place in a gift bag and write the tag to be from the children! Kids will feel so proud gifting these sweet popsicle stick ornaments they made!
