Remember when I shared these itty bitty food earrings I bought from Inedible Jewelry!? Well, it turned out that the ladies behind my fave tiny food jewelry business ALSO wrote a BOOK, The Polymer Clay Cookbook, teaching you how to make their clay creations!! I knew I had to get my hands on it and try it out for myself and let me tell you, making food jewelry might be my new favorite thing.
SOOO I teamed up with Jessica from Inedible Jewelry and with National Best Friends Day coming up on June 8th (Did ya know that!?), I adapted some of her tutorials and skills I learned from the book and made four different foodie friendship necklaces!!! OBSESSED! Today I’m sharing the details, free printable from Floating Specks to pair with your friendship necklaces AND giving away five copies of The Polymer Clay Cookbook so you can make some for yourself and your besties! Let’s do it!!!!!!
Click through for tips, tutorials + to enter the giveaway!
So, I debated and debated about how to share these tutorials and here’s the scoop… there is SO much valuable information and techniques in the book that I just can’t sum it all up here in a blog post. Instead, I’m sharing the pieces and tools used to create each piece of mine along with a quick written tutorial specific to the friendship necklace adaptation, but I just gotta recommend grabbing a copy if you really want to get into this! Not because I’m peddling this book now, but because I was blown away at how easily I was able to make these pieces look so REAL thanks to all the details in the book!
For reference, I made my pieces about double the size of the ones in the book for photo purposes and did so by just doubling the quantities outlined in the book’s tutorials.
Pretzel Friendship Necklaces
You’ll Need: Ecru, Yellow and White Polymer Clay, Orange-Brown Oil Pastel, Paint Brush, Craft Knife, Headpin, Chain/Necklace
To Make: Mix ecru and yellow clay together and roll into a 4-5″ snake. Overlap the ends of the snake and then twist and fold it over, forming the pretzel shape. Push a headpin through the bottom, up through the twist and out the center top of the pretzel. Rub oil pastel onto the pretzel shape and use a paint brush to spread the color evenly over it giving it the “baked” look. Cut small piece of “salt” from a tiny snake of white clay and place onto pretzel. Bake according to package instructions or about 20 minutes at 275 degrees.
Waffle Friendship Necklaces
You’ll Need: Ecru, Yellow and White Polymer Clay, Orange-Brown + Raw Sienna Oil Pastel, Lollipop Stick, Liquid Clay, Paint Brush, Craft Knife, Headpin, Chain/Necklace (Note: I adapted the shape of the waffle tutorial in the book to make it friendship necklace friendly!)
To Make: Mix ecru and yellow clay together. Flatten a ball of your new clay color into a pancake and cut into four wedges. Slide a headpin through the bottom point and out the top curve of each wedge. Use a craft knife to slice the round edges of a lollipop stick off forming a square shape on one side and a triangle shape on the other. Press the adapted lollipop stick into wedge, forming the waffle pattern. Rub the orange-brown onto the ridges and brush to evenly spread the color. Shave a bit of raw sienna oil pastel into a bit of liquid clay and mix forming the “syrup”. Paint it onto a small portion of the waffle and top with a small square of yellow clay as butter. Bake according to package instructions or about 20 minutes at 275 degrees.
Burger Friendship Necklace
You’ll Need: Ecru, Yellow, Red, Green, Brown and White Polymer Clay, Orange-Brown + Raw Sienna Oil Pastel, Paint Brush, Ball Point Clay Tool, Craft Knife, Headpin, Chain/Necklace
To Make: Flatten a ball of ecru clay into a pancake and another into a dome. Rub orange-brown oil pastel (I also used some raw sienna) onto the top and bottom of the bun and brush to spread color evenly. Flatten a ball of brown clay into a thick pancake and use a ball point clay tool to add texture around the edge. Also flatten a red ball into a pancake, a yellow ball into a square and roll a green ball into a snake then flatten and ruffle. Assemble your burger and slip a headpin through the center. Bake according to package instructions or about 20 minutes at 275 degrees. Glaze according to book instructions.
Fries Friendship Necklace (This tutorial is not in the book.)
You’ll Need: Yellow + Red Polymer Clay, Orange-Brown Oil Pastel (Optional), Paint Brush, Craft Knife, Headpin, Chain/Necklace
To Make: Flatten a red ball of clay into a pancake and cut out the fry container shapes above. Flatten a ball of yellow clay into a long pancake and cut slices for the fries. Layer the fries on top of the larger red shape, then cover with the smaller red shape. Pinch the edges of the reds together to seal. Optional, rub + brush orange-brown pastel onto some of the fries. Bake according to package instructions or about 20 minutes at 275 degrees.
Donut Friendship Necklaces (This tutorial is not in the book.)
You’ll Need: Ecru, Pink, Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, White and Orange Polymer Clay, Orange-Brown Oil Pastel (Optional), Paint Brush, Craft Knife, Headpin, Chain/Necklace
To Make: Flatten a ball of ecru clay into a thick pancake and push the other end of your paintbrush through the center to form a hole. Cut the pancake in half. Flatten two balls of pink clay into thin half-circle shapes to form the frosting. Layer the pink on top of the ecru. Roll out very thin snakes of rainbow colors of clay and cut into tiny sprinkle shapes, press onto the top of the frosting. Bake according to package instructions or about 20 minutes at 275 degrees.
For All Necklaces: Glaze according to book instructions if desired. Form a wrapped loop with your headpin (Instructions in book or there’s a ton of online tutorials!), slide onto chain.
