I could not be more excited to be typing these words: WE. BOUGHT. A. HOUSE!!!! A real live house!!! Oh my gosh, it is such a dream come true and has been SUCH a big secret we’ve been keeping!!!!!!!! (Though many of you thought I was pregnant or Jeff was opening a Dunkin’ Donuts. Hahaha!)
As a lot of you know, we’ve been looking on and off for a long time but once Baby A came along, it was glaringly more obvious that we needed to get out of our 3 floor walk-up, one bedroom apartment. (I have SO much more respect for those of you raising babes in NYC and hiking up all those walk-up apartment and subway stairs! Phew!)
The short version: We put a long-shot offer in on a 1930s charmer with allll the character and quirks and a big BIG backyard and somehow, by some literal miracle… we got it!! We’re actually still in shock.
The long version: We had been looking in a totally different area of LA but I have this problem where I like to look at house listings all day long (#productive) and I happened to come across this house that had really amazing arches (evidenced above) and I didn’t even look at where it was, I was just like “We’re going to go see this house.”
So the next Saturday, at the end of a long day of looking at places that needed a lot of help and were already at least $100k over asking, we drove over to this house. We walked in and our jaws just kind of dropped. It had character, it had three bedrooms, it had a huge (for LA) backyard covered in bougainvillea… AND it was in our price range!?
We met the owner and chatted with him and the next day we wrote our offer along with a note about us and Arlo. We even included a cute pic of him because while we weren’t coming to the table with an all cash offer, we DID have a cute baby. GOTTA USE WHAT YOU GOT, FOLKS! Haha!
Two days later we got a call that we didn’t get the house, our offer wasn’t even being considered. Luckily, our real estate agent/my sister-in-law, Eileen (who btw has literally been asking us if we were ready to get a house since our wedding day haha! If you need an agent in the LA-area, she’s the absolute BEST!!!) didn’t take that for an answer and asked if they’d let us come back with a better offer.
So we put in our very best offer and just crossed our fingers.
Several more days later (it was now early May) and we were at the Getty with Lauren & Mike who were visiting us that week and Eileen called and said “Sorry, you didn’t get the house.” And I was all “Oh ok, well we knew it was too good to be true” and shook my head “no” at Jeff.
And THEN! She goes “JUST KIDDING YOU GOT IT I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!” And then this happened…
Side note: In case you’re all “Aw, Kelly is EXTRA excited in that last photo with the stroller!” It’s actually just that Jeff ran over my foot with Arlo’s stroller. Haha!
Fast forward through a month of inspections and negotiations and we were closing at the beginning of June! This past month and a half has been kind of a blur with Jeff at the property every few days managing a new roof and HVAC, refinishing floors, paint, and now… we move in next week!!!!
Oh my gosh I just have so much to update you on. I hate keeping secrets!!! The good news is every single room needs a big ol’ makeover and after YEARS of you guys requesting more home content, the time has ARRIVED! This will be the first time where Jeff and my interior style really gets to shine!!

Annika says
Congrats!!!!
This is such a similar story to our home buying experience. We ended up buying a house in a neighborhood we’d never even heard of because I was scrolling the real estate apps and found our midcentury dream home right here in Nashville! We moved here from LA, so believe me I understand the house buying struggle — it’s one of the reasons why we left. We beat out FOURTEEN other offers and also sent a letter and a photo of us with our dog, Bucket and I’m sure that’s what sealed the deal.
Here’s to many happy memories in your new home.

Things I want to see to help me in my hopeful someday journey to buying a house….
*leveling a floor to put tile down
*cleaning out ventilation (hopefully in a house that old it’ll be done!)
*I’m always up for tips on painting (fireplaces, kitchen, good paint for a bathroom, etc)
