How to Use Your Elf Notes

Here are some ideas for each of the 16 notes that you can find on the printable Elf on the Shelf notes! Each of these notes can be left somewhere for your kids to find, sometimes with an accompanying surprise.

1. “Wow! Thanks for all this paper to I could make snowflakes!”– Use toilet paper, paper towels or printer paper to make snowflakes and leave the elf note along with them!
2. “Will you draw a picture for me!?”– Leave this note with some paper and paint or crayons for your child to draw a special picture for their Elf friend.
3. “Woah! Your Christmas tree is so cool.”– Place this note with the Elf on the Christmas tree for the little ones to find!
4. “I hid 5 ornaments… Can you find them?”– Take 5 ornaments off of the tree and hide them. Then, place this Elf note along with the Elf on the tree or near it!
5. “5 days ’til Christmas! 5 days! 5 days!”– You can use these notes as a fun way to start the countdown to Christmas.
6. “Will you read a Christmas book with me?”– Place this Elf note with the Elf, holding one of your child’s favorite Christmas books! This is great for bedtime!
7. “Mmm… What’s for breakfast!?”– Place this note on the kitchen table before the kids wake up!
8. “Look what I found!”– This can be used with lots of things, including something that your child has been looking for!

9. “Surprise!”– You can use this note for tons of things! Maybe place the Elf and this note with a plate of freshly baked cookies, or a new game, book or movie.
10. “Oops! I made a mess.”– Sometimes the Elf has to eat, right? Leave a few crumbs with the Elf and this note for your kids to find.
11. “Thought you might like this extra special treat!”– Leave this note with a treat like a candy cane!
12. “10 days! 10 days! 10 days! 10 days!”– Another fun countdown note to use!
13. “Brrr… It’s cold in here.”– Even the Elf on the Shelf might get cold in the wintertime! Have the Elf leave this note by a blanket!
14. “Don’t forget to brush your teeth!”– Your Elf might be able to convince your kiddos to brush their teeth with this note left in the bathroom!
15. “Have a great day!”– This is a great note to use before heading off to school.
16. “Listen, I was just looking for the candy, ok?”– Sometime the Elf in the Shelf can get into mischief like looking in the pantry for candy! Leave the Elf in the pantry with this note for your child to find!
