Annie bought a bunch of school lunch trays on a recent prop sourcing trip and we immediately were like OMG! School lunch COSTUME! With everything you need for a balanced school lunch of course: a PB&J, an apple, a chocoalte chip cookie and (my personal fave) a juice box! You could turn any of these into more elaborate costumes, but I love how simple they all are. All you need is a dress to get started, ladies!
DIY PB&J Costume
Ingredients
- Tan Dress
- 1/4 Yard Light Brown Felt
- 1/4 Yard Purple Felt
- 4 ” Wide Elastic If you can find light brown elastic, you don’t need the brown felt!
- Hot Glue Gun
- Velcro
Instructions
- Measure the elastic around your waist and cut it to be about 1” longer than that. If you’re working with brown elastic, move on to step 2! If you’re working with white elastic, cut a piece of brown felt the same length and width as your elastic. Hot glue on top of the elastic.
- Cut a piece of purple felt, about half the width of the brown but the same length. Along one edge, cut it to be wavy. Leave the other edge straight.
- Glue the purple on top of the brown. When doing so, gather it slightly so it makes a ruffle.
- Cut a piece of velcro just slightly shorter than the width of the elastic. Adhere one half to the front side of one edge of your belt, and the other half to the back side of the other.
DIY Juice Box Costume
Ingredients
- Red Dress
- Wrapping Paper Tube
- White Paint
- Hot Glue Gun
- Cellophane
- Doublestick Tape
- Temporary Hem Tape
Instructions
- Paint a wrapping paper tube white and let dry completely.
- Bend a wrapping paper tube into a straw shape. One side should be shorter than the other.
- Hot glue the bent part in a few places to help it keep it’s shape. It doesn’t need to be perfect as the cellophane will hold it in.
- On a flat surface, lay the straw on top of a piece of cellophane. Fold the cellophane over the straw and trim the folded edge so you have two equal-sized pieces. Use double stick tape to seal all the edges.
- Use hem tape to attach the straw to the dress.
DIY Apple Costume
Ingredients
- Green Dress
- Green Fruit Hat
- 1 Sheet White Felt
- Black Seeds
- Scissors
- Temporary Hem Tape
Instructions
- Cut a half circle out of white felt. It can be as big or as small as you want it to be.
- Adhere seeds along the rounded edge of the circle.
- Adhere the piece to the dress using temporary hem tape. Press firmly to seel tape to dress.
- Just add a fruit hat!
DIY Chocolate Chip Cookie Costume
Ingredients
Instructions
- Peel off backing and stick chocolate chips on to an old t-shirt or other scrap fabric and pull off a few times to reduce stickiness.
- Adhere chocolate chips to dress as desired!

Of course, at least ONE of you should carry a lunch box! Preferably this smiley one. Not gonna lie though, my middle school lunch of choice looked like french fries and cookies or lunchables. At least we also have the french fries covered…. 😉
