Mary Poppins Returns is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies. It is the perfect sequel, in my opinion, with so many call back to the original, perfect music, an incredible cast and gorgeous costumes.
One year for Oogie Boogie Bash, I knew our Disney inspired costumes had to be Mary Poppins and Jack in their painted outfits from the Royal Doulton Music Hall scene and we made it happen. Here’s how to make Mary Poppins Returns Costumes of your own!
How To Make a Mary Poppins Returns Costume
There are so many incredible costumes in Mary Poppins Returns to choose from but Mary Poppins’ pink striped ensemble is my favorite from this film! Because the entire costume is styled in a painterly fashion, it leaves a lot of room for creating without the need for perfection. Here’s what you’ll need:
Supplies Needed
- White Victorian style tiered skirt
- Pink long sleeve button front blouse (or white, and you can dye it like I did with a thrifted shirt I found!)
- Faux Peter Pan Collar
- Fabric paint in shades of pink and turquoises
- Paint brushes
- Black and orange fabric markers
- Small Straw Hat
- Pink ribbon
- 3 large sheets white craft foam
- Wax paper
- Three small fake flowers
- Parasol
- White lace gloves
- White Victorian boots
Step-by-Step Tutorial
- For the skirt: Layer by layer, you’re going to paint pink stripes on every tier of the victorian skirt. Be sure to put a tray or wax paper in between each layer while you’re painting so the paint doesn’t seep through and let each layer dry before moving on to the next. I just freehanded my stripes, since it is supposed to have a “painterly” look.
- Brush a slightly deeper pink paint than the color of your shirt onto the tops and bottoms of the sleeves and the bottom of the bodice.
- My shirt did not have buttons down the front, so I drew them instead with paint and a black fabric marker.
- For the collar: Trace the edge of your Peter Pan collar onto white craft foam. Draw a ruffled shape, about 1.5″ long all along the edges as shown.
- Draw a bow shape on another piece of craft foam.
- Paint these pieces pink and draw in the lines of the bow and ruffles with black fabric marker.
- Leaving 1/2″ overhang at the top of the foam (above where you drew the collar’s edge, so you can attach it), cut out your collar as well as your bow.
- Paint a pink strip along the neckline of your Peter Pan collar and outline it with black fabric marker. Then, make black stitching marks along the bottom edge.
- Hot glue the foam ruffle and the bow to the collar.
- For the hat: Paint the rim of your hat pink.
- Glue a pink ribbon around the base of the hat.
- Draw two sets of wing shapes on white craft foam. Draw two bird heads as well. Paint one set of wings and head pink and one blue. Add details with craft markers.
- Next you’re going to create a “ball” to act as the body out of simply crumpled up wax paper. Wrap the wings around the ball you created and hot glue. Attach the head as well.
- Hot glue the two birds to the side of your hat and glue flowers into their beaks if desired!
- Assemble your costume. The skirt, if you purchased the one I linked and used, should be worn backwards. I attached the hat to my head with bobby pins!
How To Make Jack’s Costume
The color of Jack’s suit in this incredible scene is so striking and the perfect complement to Mary Poppins’ more subtle tones. Here’s how to create his costume.
Supplies Needed
- White vest and tailcoat
- White trousers
- White button down
- Red narrow tie
- White top hat
- Turquoise fabric dye
- Turquoise, red, white and lime green fabric paint
- Paint brushes
- Turquoise shoes
Step-by-Step Tutorial
- Following the directions on the dye bottle, dye your top coat/vest.
- For the top coat: Paint a plaid pattern on the vest. Start be roughly sketching out the pattern lightly with white paint. Then paint the green plaid pattern. Add some red details as well.
- Paint the buttons green and outline them with a black fabric marker.
- Add white paint to the sleeves and edges of the lapel to make it look painted.
- Paint a thin black line and a thin red line along the edge of the lapel, coat and sleeves.
- For the pants: Paint turquoise stripes on your pants. They do not have to be perfect!
- Then paint red stripes overtop, allowing some white to show in between the two color stripes.
- Use a black marker to add a line that varies in thickness along the edge of each stripe.
- For the tie: Paint the center of the tie and knot with white paint to add a faux “highlight”.
- Outline the tie with a black fabric marker.
- For the hat: Paint the hat turquoise. Paint the rim red.
- Assemble the costume! Add a white shirt underneath the coat and turquoise shoes.
