DIY Donut Balloons

9/24/2013

After I made the donut piñata, I decided I should probably just start making donut everything. Are you guys on board with this? One of my first ideas, not surprisingly, was donut balloons. And lo and behold, they already make donut balloons. Except “donut balloons” are really just plain donut shaped balloons, and well, what’s a donut without it’s glaze (and sprinkles)? Nothing. So, I made some fancy, colorful, sprinkle-adorned donut balloons for you all. And oh do I love them so! Hope you do too.

Almost good enough to eat! Though please don’t eat them.

Acrylic Craft Paint
Foam Brush
Crepe Paper (Cut into small rectangles)
Double-stick Tape

To create your “frosting”, paint a rough circle of paint on one side of the donut balloon. Let dry and then paint a second, thin coat for better coverage. Let dry completely (the paint dries pretty fast on these balloons!).

Add your sprinkles by adhering a piece of double stick tape to the back of each crepe paper “sprinkle” and adhering to the balloon.

The end! Try your hardest to keep your guests from now trying to eat the balloons by providing the real thing to go along with it.

This probably won’t be the last donut project you’ll see on this here blog. Consider yourself warned! Now go eat some donuts, or just make some balloons. Or, more preferably, just do both.

We just picked up the supplies to make these for our wedding. We suddenly realized that we’re going to have to paint them while they’re blown up. Any ideas on how long helium would last in them? I’d like to be able to do these ahead of time and not the night before my wedding.

    • Kelly

      Hi Tiffany!

I’m not sure how far off your wedding is, but I’d recommend doing a test run to see how long the helium would last. When you have them filled, you can request something called Hi-Float to be used, and this will extend the life of the balloons. However, since you will be adding paint (and therefore weight) to them, the float time the party store gives you might not be 100% accurate. If you can, I’d fill up a balloon, using the hi-float, and paint it as you would for the donut (remember to use thin coats of paint). Then I’d test it out and see how long it lasts for. I would imagine they could last for 2+ days that way, but I don’t want to say so for sure since I have not tried them with the hi-float!

      Hope that was helpful!!

oh,so you buy donut balloons and make…donut balloons out of them? Wow, I’m amazed, who knew this was possible!

  • Kelly

I was SO excited to make these for my daughter’s donut-themed second birthday party tomorrow! However, when I brought the balloons to our nearest Party City to have them blown up, the balloon wouldn’t inflate properly. All of the helium would rest in the bottom half of the “donut”, and it would burst if they tried to push it any further. I tried calling the manufacturer of the balloons, but they were closed. Any thoughts or tips???

    • Kelly

Oh no! So, the balloons definitely do fill up weird. The bottom gets inflated before the helium expands to the top, but they certainly shouldn’t pop because of that. When they were filling them did the balloons actually pop or did Party City just say that they would pop if they went any further? If the latter, I would go back and ask them to try again, or alternatively you could purchase one of the Balloon Time tanks and try blowing them up yourself. So sorry you are having trouble!!

Lovely post. It just started its life on FB among Balloon professionals. As a balloon professional myself and worldwide balloon instructor (yes that exists! lol) I can give you some tips. The Original Donut balloons are made by the US brand Qualatex. The balloons are made from 100% natural latex. This means if you do not store them well and leave them f.i. exposed to sunlight they Biodegrade and break down. (possibly causing the popping) another fact: a balloon professional should have known that the way we inflate the donuts is by holding the neck very close on to the nozzle so we start by inflating the top and stop when we have a nice round shape. (do not inflate the neck) last tip: Hi float only retains the helium in the balloon when it has dried up. Different temperature, humidity and ventilation will result in different float times or in extreme situations not even work. once again cute idea and enjoy the balloons.

where can you by the donut shaped balloons, besides amazon and ebay ????? please replie ! my best friends birthday is next week and i want to give something creative.

  • Anna

Are these the diamond clear or white balloons?

  • Jocelyn

Does anyone know which local store I can get the donut shaped balloons besides buying them in Amazon or eBay ? And what is the price of it? Please reply ?

  • Lindsay

Okay I’m in the middle of making these right now for my daughters first birthday. I went and had the balloons blown up with hi float and they are still facing towards the ground because of the heaviness of the paint! I’ve watered down my acrylic paint so much that I am putting it in front of a fan when I’m done so it quickly dries and doesn’t drip. Still having issues with them facing the ground and not floating properly. Any suggestions? I’m on my fourth test balloon and I’m ready to just put confetti on just the plain white balloons with no paint. Please help!!!!

    • Kelly

Hi Lindsay! So sorry you are having trouble. Balloons are so hard to “diagnose” because so much is based upon environmental factors (temperature, humidity) among other things like the helium (How full they were) and the paint (type). Perhaps try using a large paint marker or dry erase marker instead. Hope you can get it worked out, I’m sure they’ll be great even if they are frosting-less!

  • Danielle

I tried making these and the paint was just too heavy for the balloons and they no longer would float. I’m going to try this again but I was so bummed! If anyone figured out a way for these to still work let me know!!

    • Kelly

So sorry, Danielle! Balloons are so finicky. You have to use very thin coats of paint in order for them to still float. You can also try watering down your paint a bit! That might help.

  • Seini

i love love love this!!! so clever and cute!

  • ThungThung

may i know what brand of Acrylic Craft Paint that you used?

  • Angelica

    Hi!
This is so adorable! I want to make them for my daughters birthday but reading the comments makes me thing its not easy and kind of tricky. Could you tell me the exact brand of paint you used? And also how long the helium last? Should I make them the same day of the party? I want to success in this little project so any advice will
    Help so much ! Thanks
    And congrats !
