Inside Out 2 quickly became the biggest animated movie of all time and won over so many Disney loving hearts, including our families! We especially loved the addition of the new characters. So naturally, we had to make some Inside Out 2 costumes for Halloween this year. Crafting an Anxiety costume, Envy costume and Ennui costume were quite simple with mostly just clothing items you could wear long after trick-or-treating.
Of course, there’s a few DIY elements too to make these Inside Out costumes come to love. These costumes make a great trio costume, or are perfect for a family of four if you add in Embarrassment. Add in the original Inside Out characters and you’ve got a group costume or teacher costume.
Here’s the simple instructions for how to make each one!
DIY Anxiety Costume
Anxiety was the star of Inside Out 2 and her air makes for the most fun and eye-catching costume accessory. You can make it out of pipe cleaners! Here’s the step-by-step for making a DIY Anxiety costume from Inside Out 2.
Supplies
- Cream Turtleneck Sweater or Orange & White Stripe Sweater (I DIY’d mine!)
- Orange fabric paint
- Paint brush
- Scrap cardboard or wax paper (to put inside the sweater while painting)
- Painter’s tape
- Brown Flare Corduroy Pants
- Brown Lace-up Boots
- Cardboard Mailing Tube
- Headband and Orange Felt OR Wig Clips and Ribbon (I used wig clips and ribbon)
- Orange Iridescent Pipe Cleaners
- Orange Feathers (Optional, I liked the additional texture it added!)
- Hot Glue Gun
- Scissors
- Brown Belt
- 2″ Wood Circle and 2″ Wood Ring (or a large button)
- Gold paint
- Dark Brown Narrow Ribbon
- Bulldog clip or hair clip (for attaching button to belt)
- Orange Temporary Hairspray
- Bobby Pins
Step-by-Step Tutorial
- Lay your sweater flat on a table or surface and place cardboard (or wax paper or another divider so the paint doesn’t leak through!) in-between the front and back.
- Tape off one large orange stripe across the chest, one around the base of the turtleneck and three on each sleeve. Paint. Fabric paint absorbs quickly into fabric so you may need two coats depending on the material of your sweater.
- Leave the cardboard inside the sweater while drying BUT, before letting it dry completely, gently and briefly lift the painted part off the cardboard so it doesn’t stick.
- Let dry completely and then flip the sweater over and do the same on the back.
- To create the headpiece, cut a 4″ piece off the top of your cardboard mailing tube. This will be the base of your hat.
- Begin hot gluing orange pipe cleaners all around it until it is completely covered.
- Add additional pipe cleaners or feathers as desired.
- Gently run your fingers along each pipe cleaner to “curve” it, as desired.
- Now you’ll need to determine how you want to attach your headpiece to your head. I chose to put my hair in a top knot and use wig clips and bobby pins to attach the hat around my bun. You could, instead, choose to place it on a headband.
- For the wig clip method: Hot glue a wig clip to the front of the headpiece. Hot glue additional small loops of ribbon along the bottom edge that can be used to secure with bobby pins.
- For the headband method: Cut a circle of felt the same size as the bottom of your headpiece. Sandwich the headband between the headpiece and the felt and hot glue. You’ll likely need additional bobby pins to keep the headband in place on your head.
- To make the button: hot glue the wood ring to the wood circle.
- Paint with gold paint and let dry.
- Cut two small piece of ribbon and hot glue in a cross shape in the center.
- Glue a clip to the back so it can clip on to your belt.
- Assemble your costume!
- Tuck your sweater into your corduroy pants and fold down the turtleneck, to the inside instead of the outside, so the orange stripe still shows.
- If needed, use temporary hem tape to make your pants shorter so you can see more of your boots.
- Buckle your belt through your belt loops and clip the button on the front.
- Once dressed, cover your outfit with a towel and carefully have someone spray your hair with orange hairspray. Attach your headpiece as desired.
DIY Envy Costume
Envy is arguably the most adorable Inside Out 2 costume option. It’s the perfect costume for the child in your family or life. She’s short and sweet and has the most fun hair! And if you’re in a cold climate, Envy gets to wear boots. Bonus! Learn how to make a DIY Envy costume following the tutorial below.
Supplies
- Light purple/periwinkle T-shirt or Dress
- Neon yellow and white fabric paint OR neon iron on vinyl (if you have a Cricut and want to use that method!)
- Paintbrushes
- Circle stencil (or freehand it)
- Scrap cardboard or wax paper (for ensuring the paint doesn’t bleed through)
- Magenta leggings
- Peter Pan Collar (You can either buy a fake collar and paint it, or purchase magenta fabric and make one from scratch if you know how to sew!)
- Teal Boots
- Magenta Hair Clips (I used the pink ones from this set!)
- Teal Temporary Hairspray
Step-by-Step Tutorial
- Lay the t-shirt or dress flat on a table or surface and place cardboard in-between the front and back.
- Use your circle stencil and paint (I mixed neon yellow and white to make a light yellow that glowed!) to paint dots all over your shirt as desired. Fabric paint absorbs quickly so you may need to do a few coats. Let each coat dry in-between.
- Note: If using a Cricut and vinyl to create your polka dots, follow package instructions to iron on and skip to step 4.
- Leave the cardboard inside the sweater while drying BUT, before letting it dry completely, gently and briefly lift the painted part off the cardboard so it doesn’t stick.
- Paint the faux Peter Pan collar magenta (or sew one if desired).
- Assemble the Envy costume!
- Place the Peter Pan collar under the shirt/dress.
- Pair with leggings and boots.
- Cover outfit with a towel and carefully spray hair with temporary teal hairspray. Add magenta clips, one on each side.
DIY Ennui Costume
Ennui’s outfit makes for the most comfortable costume: it’s just a sweatsuit! But take up your costume a notch by covering your shoes with socks to give that completely bored, can’t be bothered feel we know and love from Ennui! Follow along below to learn how to put together an Inside Out 2 Ennui costume.
Supplies
- Navy Sweatshirt
- Navy Joggers
- 1/4 yard blue knit fabric (if desired, to add contrasting cuffs to sweatshirt and pants)
- Needle and thread
- Purple Wig
- Blue glitter temporary hairspray
- White tennis shoes
- Large white socks with gray toes (these will be placed OVER the shoes so get the largest size you can find!)
- Puffy paint or hot glue (If desired, to add to the bottom of the socks and make them non-slip)
- Purple Phone Case
Step-by-Step Tutorial
- If desired, you can temporarily make the cuffs on your sweatsuit a brighter blue, just like Ennui’s. Cut a strip of fabric the same length as the cuff plus 1″ and double the width of the cuff plus 1″.
- Hand stitch or glue the two ends together to make a circle.
- Wrap the new cuff around the existing cuff. Fold the top edge under 1/2″ to create a clean edge. Slip stitch to the existing cuff. Do the same to the inside of the cuff.
- If you’d like to make your socks non-slip, add dots of hot glue or puffy paint to the bottom and let dry completely.
- Assemble your costume!
- Spray the wig with blue glitter.
- Put on the sweatsuit.
- Put on shoes and slip socks overtop the shoes. Tuck the ends of the socks under your sweatsuit.
- Put on the wig and the purple phone case on your phone!
